Overview or Purpose
The Varanasi Development Authority is implementing the Ecological Rejuvenation and Enhancement of Ponds in Varanasi, focused on restoring three major urban ponds—the pond upstream of Kardhmeshwar Mahadev Temple, Kandwa Pond, and Kanchanpur Pond. According to the project overview in the submitted document, all three ponds currently exhibit severe ecological degradation, including dense weed infestation, sewage inflow, high pollutant loads, low dissolved oxygen levels, foul odor, solid waste dumping, and poor hydrological flow, as shown in the site assessment on pages 12–16. The project aims to revive these water bodies through a combination of nature-based solutions (NBS) and advanced eco-friendly treatment techniques, such as de-weeding, de-silting, in-situ bioremediation, phytoremediation, floating wetlands, aeration, and inlet wastewater treatment. It further includes beautification and aesthetic upgrades, such as pathways, solar lighting, softscaping with native species, boundary improvements, seating areas, observation decks, and landscape development as depicted in the concept visuals on pages 27–39. With an estimated project cost of INR 10 Crores, the rejuvenation effort focuses on improving water quality to Class B or Class D standards, enhancing biodiversity, restoring hydrological balance, and creating clean, accessible, community-friendly recreational spaces. The initiative transforms neglected water bodies into sustainable urban ecosystems that support environmental health, cultural value, and long-term community engagement across Varanasi.
